New Jersey abolished the estate, or “death” tax, in 2018, but that does not mean an estate nor beneficiaries are subject to a tax. In fact, decedents predeceasing 2018 may still have to file an estate tax return. Beneficiaries who are not Class “A” also require the personal representative to file an Inheritance Tax Return with the Division of Taxation and the requisite taxes paid.
